The BC Lions Football Club announced today that linebacker James Yurichuk has inked a contract extension through the 2012 season.

“James has been a significant part of our success on special teams since coming into the league in 2009 and is also developing into a solid contributor on defence,” said Lions GM and head coach Wally Buono. “He’s worked very hard at developing all aspects of his game and I’m pleased to have him back with us.”

Coming to the Leos via the CFL Draft (1st round, 4th overall) in 2009, Yurichuk enjoyed a productive rookie season playing in all 18 games and ranking third on the club and 10th in the CFL with 20 special teams tackles.

James followed up with a solid sophomore campaign with the Leos in 2010 again appearing in all 18 games and continuing to play a valuable role on special teams as well as a reserve linebacker, racking up 19 special teams tackles (2nd on Lions, 4th in CFL) and five tackles on defence.

“I’m excited to sign this extension,” said Yurichuk from his off-season home in Ontario. “We had a challenging year in 2010 but in the second half of the season I believe we showed all the signs of a team that can compete with the CFL’s best clubs and I can’t wait to get back on the field.”
