Lions Builder Victor Spencer Called To Hall

2006-01-26 16:50:56
The Canadian Football Hall of Fame and Museum announced today that one of the BC Lions' founding members, Victor Spencer, will be inducted into the Builder's category in 2006.

Spencer is accompanied by players Matt Dunigan, Bobby Jurasin, Allen Pitts, and Henry “Gizmo&rdquo Williams, and will enter the Hall later this fall in Hamilton.

A Vancouver-native, Spencer played an integral role in creating the BC Lions Football Club and leading a group seeking a British Columbia franchise in the Western Interprovincial Football Union. His efforts were rewarded when the long-awaited approval for a Vancouver franchise came to fruition beginning with the 1954 season.

He also served on the original stadium committee involved in the planning and execution of the 1954 British Empire Games, an event which would incorporate the construction of Empire Stadium - the first home of the BC Lions.

Spencer spent nine years as a Lions' executive, and played a key role in attracting the 1955 Grey Cup to Vancouver. He was nominated as a life member of the Lions' Board of Governors while the club remained community-owned, and was inducted into the BC Lions Wall of Fame in 2002.
