After escaping any more two-a-day’s with some punt reception heroics from Jovan Olafioye and Maurice Evans yesterday (watch the video here), the Lions took to the field for one practice session Sunday afternoon. What they gained in off-field time they paid in weather as heavy rains made the going extremely difficult for both sides of the ball.
On offence, quarterback Travis Lulay was again sharp and in no huddle situations finding Kierrie Johnson on a deep ball and throwing other passes away when protection broke down. Andrew Harris tore off some effective runs both between the tackles and to the outside while Tim Brown showed why he was the club’s combined yards leader a year ago with some slippery moves of his own.
The defence enjoyed strong performances out of the secondary, most notably Anthony Reddick who has had a very strong training camp. The hit of the afternoon came from newcomer Rodney Paulk on quarterback Thomas DeMarco during a rare ‘live’ period meant to simulate game speed and contact. The crack on DeMarco drew plenty of grimaces of sympathy form the starting receiving corps as they watched on from the sidelines.
With Paul McCallum battling a stomach ailment, second-year Leo Hugh O’Neill wrapped today’s session with some very effective kick-off and field goal reps. The rain was coming down so heavily at the end of practice, head coach Beneveides simply told his squad to head in with no departing words after the 2:20 session came to a merciful close.
The Lions released defensive end Jeremy Geathers prior to this afternoon’s session and five other newcomers that will be announced Monday morning.
