The third consecutive day of cool temperatures and damp conditions greeted the Lions on Tuesday morning as they began day three of 2012 training camp at Hillside Stadium.
Following an hour and twenty minutes of individual drills and a teaching period during the morning session, the squad came together for a red zone team session to wrap up the first practice of the day. In keeping with his camp performance to date, quarterback Travis Lulay was on point with consecutive majors to Tim Cronk, Kierrie Johnson and Andrew Harris.
Rookie receiver and late camp arrival Ernest Jackson also looked strong during skelly.
On the defensive side of the ball, linemen Rajon Henley and Maurice Evans showed good things during the inside run period.
With the afternoon designated as primarily a teach period, a new wrinkle in Mike Benevides' inaugural training camp was unveiled. Known as the rookie split, the session is a scripted opportunity for non-starters and first year players to take all the reps in practice while their veteran counterparts act as mentors - in essence, getting the veterans off their feet while keeping them engaged in the training camp process. Tuesday's rookie split session will be followed up with another on Thursday afternoon.
Also adding another look to the 2012 edition of Lions training camp is the 'banzai' period, a non-scripted session where the offense and defense are reacting to what each other is doing, not unlike a typical game situation. During Tuesday's banzai period, quarterback Mike Reilly made a beautiful long completion to second-year receiver Marco Iannuzzi who has had a number of nice catches over the past few days.
